Waist-to-Height Ratio

A simple, sex-independent check on where you're carrying weight — often a better early signal for health risk than BMI alone.

Measure your waist with a soft tape at the navel, standing relaxed, after breathing out.

Healthy · <0.5
Borderline · 0.5–0.6
Increased risk · >0.6
The classic version of this rule: keep your waist below half your height. It applies the same way regardless of sex or age band, unlike BMI.

Waist-to-height ratio tracks central (abdominal) fat, which is more strongly linked to cardiometabolic risk than overall body weight. It's a useful screening tool, not a diagnosis — a raised ratio is worth a conversation with a doctor, not a reason to panic.
